រហូតមកដល់បច្ចុប្បន្ន ពួកគេមួយចំនួនមិនឲ្យតម្លៃដល់ប្រទេសកម្ពុជា និងប្រជាជនខ្មែរនោះទេ។ ខ្ញុំធ្លាប់លឺមិត្តភ័ក្តរបស់ខ្ញុំ ដែលធ្លាប់តែធ្វើការជាមួយជនជាតិបារាំងបានប្រាប់ខ្ញុំថា ខ្មែរយើងមិនកើត ធ្វើអីក៏មិនកើត។ ហើយខ្លួនខ្ញុំផ្ទាល់ធ្លាប់លឺអំពីការរិះគន់ជាច្រើនអំពីជាតិសាសន៍ខ្មែរដោយជនបរទេស ដោយមិនមែនក្នុងន័យស្ថាបនា ប៉ុន្តែជាការម៉ាក់ងាយ។ គេថាខ្មែរមិនល្ងង់ ចាញ់ច្រាបនឹងមេដឹកនោះផ្តាច់ការតាំងពីសម័យអង្គរមក ដោយគ្មានការរើបំរាស់ ចេះតែធ្វើអ្វីតាមតែមេដឹកនាំបញ្ជា ហើយប្រទេសកម្ពុជានឹងបន្តស្ថិតនៅក្នុងស្បៃអន្តកាលនេះជារៀងរហូត។ សម្តីទាំងនេះខ្ញុំបានលឺផ្ទាល់នៅពេលដែលខ្ញុំសម្ភាស៍តាចាស់ម្នាក់មកពីអ៊ឺរ៉ុប ហើយអ្នកក៏អាចរកសម្តីទាំងនេះបានផងដែរនៅក្នុងសៀវភៅ  “បណ្តាសាកម្ពុជា” ដែលសរសេរដោយអ្នកកាសែតញូវយ៉កថែមមួយរូប។ ត្រង់នេះហើយដែលខ្ញុំចង់ដាស់តឿនថាត្រូវចេះពិចារណាឲ្យបានគ្រប់ជ្រុងជ្រោយ មុននឹងមាននិន្នាការលើអ្វីមួយ ថាគួរទទួលយកគំនិតរបស់បុគ្គលទាំងនោះដោយមិនពិចារណាលើអ្វីសោះឬយ៉ាងណា។

ត្រង់ចំណុចនេះ ខ្ញុំមិនមែនបំផុសនូវគំនិតស្អប់ ឬរើសអើងពូជសាសន៍អ្វីទេ គឺគ្រាន់តែចង់ក្រើនរំលឹកឲ្យប្រជាជនមួយចំនួនវិភាគឡើងវិញ។ ពីព្រោះមិនមែនពួកគេទាំងអស់សុទ្ធតែអាក្រក់ទេ។ ដូចគ្នានឹងប្រជាជនខ្មែរនោះដែរ គឺមានល្អ និងអាក្រក់។ ប្រទេសកម្ពុជាទទួលបានជំនួយ និងការគាំទ្រជាច្រើនពីសំណាក់លោកខាងលិចក្នុងរយៈពេលពីរទស្សវត្ស៍ចុងក្រោយនេះ។ ពួកគេមួយចំនួនបានផ្តួចផ្តើម និងចូលរួមសកម្មភាពជាមួយប្រជាជនខ្មែរជាច្រើន ក្នុងការជួយជម្រុញការអភិវឌ្ឍន៍របស់ប្រទេសកម្ពុជាកន្លងមក ដែលជាផ្នែកមួយសំខាន់ដែលធ្វើឲ្យមានប្រទេសកម្ពុជាសម័យបច្ចុប្បន្ននេះ។

A Journey to Oasis

“First, I thought Cambodia might have looked like an old-town village, but things were different from what I expected. It’s quite modern, and have almost anything you need,” said one of the BBC TV presenters. A large number of foreigners who have never been to Cambodia often view the country as a synonym of Pol Pot regime, atrocity, poverty, and prostitution. Yet they might be surprised after their first visit to country and realize that their previous perception was far from true. Because, on the other layer, Cambodia is such a magnificent country, scattered with ancient treasures, sparkling nature, and its untiring-friendly people, their combination makes Cambodia become an undeniably unique place to be discovered. The place where you find reality is much more than expectation.

So what sort of trips you expect to enjoy in this beautiful Southeast Asia nation? Well, in short, you can have them all. You can visit, Siem Reap, Preah Vihear, or Battambong, located at the north part of the country to experience the marvelous architecture of the ancient Khmer, dominated by thousands of ancient temples. The most famous temple in the complex is the Angkor Wat temple, the largest religious monument in the world, built in 12^th century, and it has always been regarded as the national symbol and pride. After discovering this part, you can also enjoy an eco-tourism trip to Kratie, Ratanakiri or Mondoulkiri, the northeast part of the country, where you can witness the untouched beauty of natural jewels, such as spectacular waterfalls, green and deep forests, wild animals and ethnic people who have been going on practicing their tradition for hundred years. Then, if you are tired of exploring the north part of the country, you can definitely divert your journey to the south, where you can enjoy the beauty of white-sand beach and unexploited islands in Sihanouk Ville. You can also have some time staying at the heart of Cambodia, where the local tradition collides with globalization. It is the hub of education, economy, communication, culture, and politics.

Living in Cambodia for more than 25 years, I have been to almost every part of the country. I have been captured countless images into my memory. Those images always appear differently through time and places, so it means that you can pamper yourself by visiting anywhere in the country based on your mood and preferences.

Despite the fact that there are a lot of good places to choose for my next trip, my favorite travel destination is Sihanouk Ville. I like visiting the coastal area, where I can feel smooth-white sand and deep-blue ocean. It is the best way to get rid of stress and problems I have been carrying at work.

I remember 15 years ago, when my family had the first trip to the beach resort, I was so overwhelmed by its wonder. We drove up the hill and experienced the brilliant landscape of the area when we arrived. We had tasty seafood for lunch. After lunch, my brother and I rushed to the beach to catch small crabs and collect some shining leftover seashells. A moment later, we took off our clothes and jumped into the salty sea water. It was such an amazing time that I didn’t even care that my skin got burned and became so tanned after playing a few hours. I swallowed quite a lot of salty water, and I thought it tasted weird. After jumping and swimming for three hours, the enormous red sun was about to disguise, I felt so enough, and I thought the beach was not cool anymore.

I, then, lay near my dad as he was talking to my mom. I suddenly noticed his speech as he said, “I thought we were very big at home, but, here, there are many people who are bigger than us. The people have many things that we don’t have. Things were different from what I thought. I usually feel my importance and ego when I am surrounded by other things, but when I am sitting in front of the ocean I feel so tiny and insignificant.”

After that, he started to ask me to look at the sunset, which reflected the sea water and made it became a golden carpet. At that moment, he talked to me, “Look, son, today the scenery is breathtaking, so let enjoy what you can feel and see now. You know, we don’t know what lie ahead tomorrow. Today, the reflection of the sun has made the sea turns gold. Tomorrow, when cloudy weather comes, the sea will turn coal.” By the time, I didn’t really get what he meant. Those words just came into my left ears and went out of my right ear, but I can still remember the rhyme and the familiar voice.

Three years later, my dad passed away to somewhere up above. Since then, I usually visit the place which we first visited. It made me nostalgic. I usually soothe myself with a glass of fresh orange juice and relaxed in a folding beach chair, protecting by a giant umbrella. I enjoy inhaling the chilling breeze and listening to the rhyme created by the ocean waves. It makes me feel the serenity and simplicity of nature. When I look at the ocean, I am always amazed with its mightiness.

One October evening, the weather was cloudy when I had a trip there. The sky was so dark and about to rain. Somehow, I managed to approach the beach to experience a complete different view from a typical day. The wind whirled swiftly and cloud turned so dark that I could not see things clearly. Suddenly, I saw a figure of a man running out of the sea rushed frighteningly ashore as the lightening, roaring thunder, and aggressive waves chased behind him. That person seemed to notice me, and I heard he shouted on top of his lung to be heard, “Hey, man. What are you doing here? Please, find the safe place. There’s storm in the sea and we almost drowned in the middle of the sea.” He went up to the safe place, and a thought had come to me, “we can’t really predict and expect much thing. Sometimes, in blink of an eye, the beautiful scenery has turned to be so violent and cruel, and turn back to normal after a while. Gold turns to coal, but coal can also turn to gold.”

So this is one of many stories about my trip throughout Cambodia. I hope to capture more beautiful stories to my storage, so that I can tell the world more about brilliant stories in Cambodia. I believe that there countless places in Cambodia to visit and leave visitors with great expectation.

However, in order to provide satisfactory services to visitors, the government and general population, firstly, have to work on improving services and physical infrastructure. This means that people need to be trained in providing excellent services to local and international visitors, and the infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, railways, buildings, public space and so on, must be constructed in an attractive and high quality standard, so that people can leave with good judgment. In addition, we must also emphasize on environmental protecting because the more tourists we get, the more waste we gain, so the government has to be more skillful in environmental management to sustain the green growth in the sector. Last but not least, we must take good care of cultural and natural sites, which are the hotspots of tourist destinations. They get spoiled and damaged easily. Thus, if we do not want to see them disappear, we must pause for a second, and think about the future that we might make. I do believe we can achieve this step through creating clear and effective framework, good governance, and public’s participation to make Cambodia sounds like her slogan, “Cambodia, Kingdom of Wonder.”

Generally speaking, Korean stars have got a kind of beauty and handsomeness which is regarded as a perfect standard to many Cambodians. They are eye-catching. Let’s not talk about their secret of plastic surgery! The Korean stars are tall, sexy, and in an ideal sharp. They have got pearly white skin, shining hair, and long nose, sexy and lovely red lips. And oh yeah! Many Cambodians translate these into rich, classy, and high so’ qualities. If you tell a young Cambodian that she looks just a Korean star, she would feel delighted.

Expensive scenes

Materialistic scenes make the dramas and music videos look very attractive. Korean producers invest a great deal in producing highest quality pieces of music videos and films that no other Asian countries could make with the same budget.

A few months ago while I was watching the Rihanna’s music video, “Diamond”, one of my friends said, “Korean music videos are crystal clear and eye-poping much more than the U.S music videos that you are watching, guy,”. Then, I raised my eye brows and said nothing. I agreed with him in some extend as I was also a K-pop fan in the past. Korean producers have always been trying to produce new flavors in their music. And I actually really love some of them: “Blue”, “Fantastic Baby”, and “Monster” by Big Bang, “Fiction” by B2ST, and “The Boy” by SNSD. You should check out. They are enticing and extravagant!

Well focus

They focus well on specific target audience. For instance, they produce dramas with excellent plots with romantic and depressing love themes to gather attention from young teenagers and female adult audience. And as a result, they have successfully achieved this and made Korea become the top 10 cultural exporting country. Besides, K-pop (Korean pop music) has excessively emphasized on teenagers all over East and South East Asia. Have you ever asked yourself why most of Korean songs you heard were titled in English? Because they have targeted broader audience who are not Korean and it gives chances to the non-Korean speaking fans understand the main message of the songs easily.  Aiming to be label their names in their fans’ hearts, the Korean singers always show off their excellent dance moves, colorful clothes, and ear-luring lyrics.

The successful campaign of pushing Korean music to the global recognition has made it becomes the second biggest music market after US. Korean pop have hit on a billion and a half Asians, contributing 2 billion dollars per year to Korean economy, according to the BBC. Understanding the trend and its audience are major key factors of their success

The Fall of Thai and Chinese Culture

Before 2003, Thai popular culture had a really strong impact in Cambodian society. Every TV channel was full of Thai movies and music. Cambodians really adored Thai movies because both countries have similar belief and value systems, making Cambodians felt very connected with Thai popular culture. But sadly, the 2003 outraging forced Thai movies out of the TV screens since that year. It has lost its mighty popularity in Cambodia though Thai movies have always being watching by older female Cambodians through rental VCDs, Thai popular culture has no longer played an important role in this country.

Chinese popular culture also had a strong influence before the emerging of Korean Wave. Hong Kong films were extremely admired and liked. People watched Hong Kong films starred by Jackie Chan, Jet Lee, or Andy Lau instead of Hollywood movies. However, over years there has been criticism that Hong Kong and Taiwan-made films, dramas, and music are slow to make a new flavor and less attractive compared to the Korean made films and music. People still watch Chinese films and listen to their music, but it is pretty hard for them to gain their spot back.

“Taiwanese music still keeps doing the same things over last ten years. It is kind of boring when you listen to ballad music all the time,” said one of my Facebook friends.

The Introduction of My TV

Despite the fact that Korean dramas have appeared and got positive attention since early 2000, Korean pop had never been stood out before the introduction of My TV in early 2009. As a music TV channel, My TV was a phenomenal tool to bring Korean pop into Cambodian scene. They play all types of popular music: Khmer, Korean, Chinese, and American music. Yet they found that Korean music really has more impact on teenagers/ high schoolers. K-pop has started to explode. Since then producers at My TV have started to invite several Korean bands and singers, and at least once a year for their annual biggest TV concert.  

All in all, you could see that Korean popular culture really has a solid impact in Cambodia and the whole East Asia. But the thing is that how long they will be able to maintain their energy to keep people in questions? I personally think it still be able to keep it position at least till the next decade according to the current trend.  The only real threat of Korean popular culture is the mainstream U.S culture as I have observed that some young Cambodians are starting to heartedly pick the western culture and view Korean popular culture as trivial. So let see together!

Mad World

Imagine that you are being gravitated toward a black hole gobbling everything that travels in its way. And well this is the feeling of a person who is involuntarily lost a job possibly has. You are slowly breaking down and being torn apart day by day as long as you have not found a job or any other activities that can greatly console yourself.  You feel that you are useless and unproductive. As time goes by you feel stressed and get mad easily, and even become awfully desperate in life. You have very least idea to describe about yourself in a positive way when you look at other people who has a full-time to job to do. And you look back at yourself and said “This is me, a poor one. I am worth less than a penny”. You become more pessimistic, and wish for something to happen so that you could escape from this terrible time. 

Why jobs are so important to you? Actually, it is really important to you because a job is a vital part of your life. You gain respect. You are honored. And You feel your existence. These are what you get from your job though it does not always sound so positive like this, but at least you always expect to reach all of them. Jobs define who you are. And if you live in a society that values more in conformity, it is even harder for you to escape the consequences from embarrassment for living without a proper job. You have to confront with people who might easily get you upset when you don't have any particular things to do, but walk around and catch the air. Clearly, most societies in the world value conformity and people have to follow one another. A standard which is valued much on success is set for everyone, so if you fail to reach the standard, you will be desperate unless you decide to find a different type of philosophy for living. 

Well, I was one of this people. I lost a job three months ago when the company went bankrupt. In July 2012, I resigned from a job at microfinance to work for a German online company which invested in online business in Asia. Over there I was hired to lead a content production team. My team and I worked really hard, but after less than two months the investors realized that Cambodia and other small-market nations—Myanmar and Bangladesh were not ready for this kind of business, thus they resolved to close the company. 

It was a shocking news, and at that moment I felt like, “Oh my god, I was doomed”. However, I expected that I was going to find a new job very soon, not longer than two months. Because when I first graduated in 2010, I could get a job within a month when I had so less network. Now, I had a broader network, so things would be easier.

You know I remembered when I woke up the second day after losing the job, I rushed to check the time in my cell phone, and said to myself, “Oh, I was late to work!” A second later, I realized that I did not have the job anymore. I murmured desperately, “What should I do today? Where should I go?”

A week after losing the job, I started applying for jobs in different types of positions. I applied for over 60 places within three months, from a highly responsible position to an easier one. Out of 60 applications, I was contacted to interview only 5 places, which all of the 3 applications were selected by foreigners. I got offered 4 positions of out 5. Two of them was related much in direct sale which I reacted, “Sale?, Urgh”. I was very disappointed when the reality was different from what they stated in the job requirements they advertised. Some friends asked me, “Why don’t you work there temporarily?” I replied, “I dislike it. Even if I got offered a low paid job with something that is not related to sale, I would accept it,” Sometimes I even wanted to say, “I have enough money not to work in this kind of bullshit job. You know working in this field in a country like Cambodia, you will be humiliated every single day, so the amount of money you earn can’t pay for depression medicine.”

It is interesting to note that all of the applications that I tried to polish thoroughly were not considered even for a basic position. In contrast, applications which were not well prepared, I mean without cover letters, were selected and those employers who considered me were all foreigners. This led me to have an assumption that many Khmer-own companies selected candidates from their networks or they promoted the internal staff, so my applications were thrown into trash bins.

I had tried actively to get a good position, but two months later I had not been offered a decent job. Days became gloomier and gloomier to me. I became paralyzed. I started to ask myself, “What should I do next in my life? Poor guy, you lost now. Don’t expect much from everything around you— honor, pride, and fame might only exist in your dream. You should start to plan a new direction in life,”

During this period, I became a grumpy guy, easily upset and mad. I saw everything in a vague, unpleasant and dark color. I became reclusive. I did not want to do anything even my part time job. I did not clean my room. I drank sometimes... I was really spoiled.  I almost kicked everything that annoyed me out of the way. Honestly, I upset a few close people around me. They had been very helpful and good to me, but I just looked at things as they were all non-sense. Despite I had this negative feeling, I constantly told myself, “There’s got to be more to life,” It did help console me for a short period of time. 

But madness did not help anything. It only sucked your life more than the real situation of losing a job. I started to look at a new direction of life that would help me out of this mess. 

However, thank God, everything has been positively changed when I am writing this paragraph. I got a very good job offer and started working last week. I love it and the students. The first week was awesome. My life has been renewed, and it is very bright and colorful. And most importantly, I am working in building perfect attitude. It will give me more than I expect.

A key trick for everyone who is looking for a job should know is that approximately more than 70 percent of candidates are selected through network. Most of companies might promote their internal staff or select the supposed-to-be-good candidates recommended by the network. If you are having a good job at the moment, please be happy because you are the lucky one. Many university students have turned their future into family business with the help of their spouse or parents as they experienced a rough time in finding a job or some of them are not confident enough to work in private sector. So remember that besides having a solid competency, you have to build a strong network once you start working in a company or organization. It helps you a lot in a rough time.
